Guillermo Del Toro
Pacific Rim

“TODAY WE FACE THE MONSTERS THAT ARE AT OUR DOOR. TODAY WE ARE CANCELING THE APOCALYPSE”

I’m more than a fan of Guillermo del Toro, I’m a believer.

I waited to see this film…anxiously.

I finally have…and have some slight reservations.

However…

However…

Screw all that.

This movie was a spectacle of enormous proportions.

What has been accomplished here, what ends up on this screen is…unlike anything I’ve ever seen realized in cinema before.

My reservations, my issues…my complaints…are what they always are: Avoid Conventional Storytelling At All Costs!

  • Love story (Crap)
  • Predictable & corny dialogue (Come on man)
  • Floating between visionary and the standard Hollywood summer blockbuster, feel good formula business model a bit too much for my taste. (Burn, Hollywood…Burn)

But again, the end here justifies the means….and this is a spectacle to be reckoned with.

You go in knowing that you are watching a VERY EXPENSIVE Hollywood film.

Then throw Guillermo Del Toro into the mix.

Blending him with the suits that call the shots on projects of this magnitude…and you know it will be a bit compromised…but it will also be daring, original and fucking awesome at the same time.

The actors have the challenge of pretending they are walking around in 200 ton machines (Jaeger’s) battling huge dinosaur like creature(Kaijus) then creating a personal link between the CGI heavy battles they really aren’t involved in and the up close and personal backstory.

They must have had to conjure up these emotions from the page and the directors direction…and it works pretty well.

Pretty well…

It’s just that after the end of a battle, we see the actors get received by their fellow troops and get celebrated by the crews that build the robots…

And it just

doesn’t

work.

It’s pretty obvious Guillermo Del Toro is saying

“ok people, you’ve just watched a massive battle…we won, here come the pilots…you love them…Action!!!”

“Yay.”

“Nice work!”

“WOO-HOO! WE WON!”

I don’t know.

But..once you accept what’s what, and take in what’s happening on screen…this is awesome, awesome, AWESOME.

Awesome in a way Michael “Awesome” Bay’s “Transformers” could not be.

There, you watch a visually amazing barrage of robots that turn into machines and back again.

They can talk, but there’s no soul.

Here…these are people in the machines…and there in lies the emotional connection you form with what you watch.

And it works.

We care.

THE ACTING.
The best of the bunch is IDRIS ELBA.

You can’t touch him, every moment and every line is conveyed with 150% conviction. And make no mistake…

IDRIS ELBA is the man to watch people.

Charlie “JAX” Hunnam is also very good, he gives it up when he acts. I like that guy a lot.

And…

Hmm…

That’s it?

Anyway, just a few thoughts I wanted to send out to the troops.

Pacific Rim. Overall. Bad-Fucking-Ass.
Rock.
